It\u2019s short, sharp and meant to sting. A word spat at people who don\u2019t fit everyone\u2019s idea of how a life should be lived. In the media, in politics and in everyday speech, <em>scum<\/em> is used to \u201cother\u201d and put people down.<\/p><p><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/nkdr2tezfkmqyqcz3um7mzlijczjzofoe4emwl1y35veoyxo.jpeg.jpeg?w=1140&amp;z=1.1&amp;fx=0.491173108200407&amp;fy=0.4983108956389679&amp;v=2\" alt=\"nkdr2tezfkmqyqcz3um7mzlijczjzofoe4emwl1y35veoyxo.jpeg.jpeg?w=1140&amp;v=2\" \/><\/p><h2>Class Warfare in Headlines<\/h2><p>The tabloid press - especially <em>The Sun<\/em>, <em>The Daily Mail<\/em> and <em>The Express<\/em> - have long used <em>scum<\/em> to describe people who don\u2019t conform to middle-class ideals. It\u2019s been thrown at:<\/p><p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thejusticegap.com\/12426\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Strikers<\/u><\/a><\/p><p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Archives\/1988\/06\/15\/British-newspaper-on-soccer-riots-Scum-fans-at-it-again\/1314582350400\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Football fans<\/u><\/a> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/sport\/footballers-they-re-total-scum-7265653.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>and footballers<\/u><\/a>)<\/p><p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/17262133.benefits-scum---darlington-labour-candidate-quizzed-social-media-posts\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>People on benefits<\/u><\/a><\/p><p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2013\/may\/17\/nigel-farage-fascist-scum-protesters?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Protesters<\/u><\/a><\/p><p>Rarely is there curiosity behind these headlines. The word flattens context and complexity into something disposable, a person no longer worth listening to and someone who\u2019s often held up as a figurehead for everything that\u2019s wrong in the world.<\/p><h2>A Political Weapon<\/h2><p>In 2021, Labour\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2021\/sep\/26\/angela-rayner-stands-by-remarks-calling-tories-scum?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Angela Rayner caused outrage when she called Tory ministers \u201ca bunch of scum.\u201d<\/u><\/a> The backlash was loud, especially from the right-wing press. But the outrage wasn\u2019t really about the word, it was about who was saying it and who was being criticised. Meanwhile, the same media that clutched its pearls has often used <em>scum<\/em> to describe migrants, campaigners and anyone seen as a threat to the status quo.<\/p><h2>Criminalisation by Language<\/h2><p>In crime reporting, <em>scum<\/em> is often used to strip people of dignity. People from poor or racialised backgrounds are reduced to a single word in headlines like \u201cLock up this scum!\u201d or \u201cGet scum off our streets.\u201d There\u2019s no asking <em>why<\/em> someone ended up there. No room for stories, survival or struggle. Just another lazy label.<\/p><h2>Reclaiming the Word<\/h2><p>Although we\u2019re on a mission to reclaim the word, others have gone before us. <em>Scum<\/em> has already been claimed, reworked and thrown back by radical feminist <strong>Valerie Solanas<\/strong>, who used it in the 1960s as the title of her <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/scum-manifesto-9781784784409\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em><u>SCUM Manifesto<\/u><\/em><\/a> - a wild, furious rejection of patriarchy and capitalist control. Her use was a provocation, a challenge, a refusal to be polite or palatable.<\/p><p><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/1jzxf7jw8o3khrndyiz2oldxodfcgoxgolxnxnvkr6efsozh.png.png?w=1140&amp;v=2\" alt=\"1jzxf7jw8o3khrndyiz2oldxodfcgoxgolxnxnvkr6efsozh.png.png?w=1140&amp;v=2\" \/><\/p><p>More recently, the band <strong>IDLES<\/strong> turned the insult into a celebration of contradiction in their song <em>\u201cI\u2019m Scum\u201d - <\/em>a howl of pride from the margins, owning the label and everything that comes with it.<\/p><div data-youtube-video=\"\"><iframe class=\"youtube\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/trU5JACXs5w?si=7KD5QQY1cKC7hXQL\"><\/iframe><\/div><hr \/><p>In his stand up show, Tom Mayhew is Benefit Scum, comedian Tom Mayhew shares his experiences of growing up working class and claiming Jobseeker\u2019s Allowance, challenging the stigma and media-fuelled prejudice aimed at benefit claimants. Through humour, honesty and vulnerability, Mayhew dismantles stereotypes about poverty and unemployment, highlighting the dignity and determination of people often dismissed as \u201cscum.\u201d The show is both a critique of class inequality and a celebration of working class resilience, delivered with warmth and political bite. You can get a taste of it in<span style=\"font-family:'Times New Roman';\"> <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/m000sr6q\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:'Times New Roman';\"><u>Radio 4\u2019s serialised version, available on BBC Sounds.<\/u><\/span><\/a><\/p><p><strong>MANIFESTO\u2019S \u201cOWN IT\u201d<\/strong> range is about reclaiming words like this. Words used to silence or shame. Words meant to shut people out before they\u2019re even seen. When we wear <em>SCUM<\/em>, we\u2019re not accepting the insult \u2014 we\u2019re rejecting the judgement behind it. We\u2019re saying: if this is what you call people like us, then fine. We\u2019ll wear it. This way it becomes a rejection of elitism and a refusal to participate in respectability politics. It\u2019s anti-gloss, anti-corporate, anti-wank. It\u2019s a badge of creative resistance, sparking uncomfortable conversations and calling out the lazy, harmful narratives we often absorb without question.<\/p><p><\/p><h3 style=\"text-align:center;\">At its core, wearing SCUM isn\u2019t about loving the insult, it\u2019s about denying someone else the power to define you.
