KNEECAP: Loud, Unapologetic and Exactly What We Needed
Kneecap isn’t just a film - it’s a statement. A riotous, fast-talking, deeply political joyride that refuses to ask permission. It’s perhaps no surprise that controversy follows them around, but controversy is often essential to make a point.

There’s something beautiful about how Kneecap - the film and the band - have unapologetically kicked open the doors of mainstream consciousness. Loud, furious and full of heart, the film captures not just the story of three Gaeilge rappers rising up from West Belfast, but the energy of an oppressed people using their voice to full effect. It’s a riotous, punk-fuelled celebration of resistance, creativity and cultural pride - and it doesn’t ask for permission.

Set in Belfast, the film follows the story of how the group formed, blending fiction with the band’s own experiences and throwing in a solid dose of satire. It’s raw, funny and steeped in culture - from street politics to Gaeilge to blunt critiques of British colonialism. What makes it sing, though, is its confidence. Kneecap doesn’t pander. It’s not here to smooth its edges or dilute its message. It’s bold, it’s brash and it knows exactly who it’s speaking to.

Naturally, that’s made a lot of people uncomfortable.

From its release, Kneecap has drawn criticism from voices who either don’t get it or don’t want to. The British press in particular has clutched its pearls over the film’s irreverence, politics and refusal to sanitise history. But it wasn’t made for them. It’s not a polished, redemptive, tidy tale. It’s messy, it’s real and it’s joyful in a way that only true resistance can be. If that offends, good. Art like this should provoke.

There’s been a fair bit of noise from those who claim the film glorifies republicanism or fuels division. Some argue that its rebellious spirit is dangerous, that it undermines “peace” by daring to be political. But that critique misses the point entirely. Kneecap isn’t promoting violence - it’s promoting identity, resistance and the right to speak truth to power. It’s telling a story that doesn’t often get told on screen and doing it in a way that’s fresh, loud and entirely from lived experience. There’s a difference between glorification and representation; this film knows the line and dances on it deliberately.

Most recently, the band themselves have sparked controversy with comments made during their set at Coachella, where they seemingly called for violence against MPs. Yes, it was reckless. Yes, it handed ammunition to those already eager to dismiss them, but the moral outrage that has followed, particularly from the same commentators who’ve stayed silent on the genocide unfolding in Gaza, rings painfully hollow. We’ve seen far more outrage over the words of a punk band than we have over the UK government’s ongoing complicity in state violence, arms sales and the dehumanisation of entire populations. If we’re going to talk about harm, let’s be honest about where it’s really coming from.

What Kneecap have consistently done is use their platform to call out that hypocrisy. Their solidarity with Palestine isn’t performative, it’s rooted in lived experience. They understand what it means to have your culture criminalised, your voice demonised and your community brutalised. The Irish story, particularly in the North, is one of resistance against occupation and oppression. So of course they see the parallels. Of course they stand with Gaza.

Update - Since originally writing this blog, Kneecap member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh has been charged with a terrorism offence, a charge we fundamentally disagree with. The case rests on the fact that he held up a flag of a group proscribed as a terrorist organisation at one of the band’s concerts after it was thrown onto the stage. This is a hollow charge, a political move dressed up as criminal justice. The case isn’t about public safety. It’s about shutting down protest and uncomfortable criticism of power. Wasting public money on such a flimsy prosecution while the UK government turns a blind eye to war crimes in Gaza exposes further the rank hypocrisy at the heart of this effort to silence dissent.

So no, we won’t be turning on them. We’re not in the business of silencing those who stand with the persecuted. We’re in the business of raising those voices higher.

And if you’re feeling uncomfortable? Good, that’s where change begins.

This is a call to arms. For Palestine, for anyone that’s been persistently shat on, for truth-tellers, troublemakers and those who refuse to sit quietly while innocent people are murdered. Let’s turn the volume up and make it impossible not to listen.

Maybe not everyone’s favourite festive belter, but it is ours.
