The weekend - that was a union win. Paid holidays? Union. Sick pay, maternity leave, health and safety laws, the minimum wage - none of it landed from above; it was dragged into existence by workers who organised, went on strike and refused to be ignored.

Why Unions Matter

Unions have been shaping the landscape of workers’ rights in the UK since the Industrial Revolution. From the early days of resisting dangerous working conditions and excessive hours, to the establishment of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in 1868, unions have been at the forefront of advocating for fair treatment and better conditions for workers.

In recent times, unions have continued to play a vital role in UK life. For instance, they have been instrumental in securing higher wages and better work benefits for their members. According to the TUC, union members in the UK earn, on average, 6.5% more than non-unionised workers. Unions also provide support to stop workplace bullying and discrimination, ensuring healthier workplaces and offering legal assistance when needed.

But unions aren’t just about the past, they’re about the present and future. In an era where workers face new challenges, from gig economy exploitation to the erosion of job security and AI in the workplace, unions remain a crucial line of defence. They empower workers to collectively bargain, to have a voice in their workplaces and to stand up against unfair practices.

Some of the main unions in the UK are:-

Unite the Union: One of the UK’s largest unions, representing workers across various sectors including manufacturing, transport and public services.

UNISON: The UK’s largest union, serving more than 1.3 million members, primarily in public services.

GMB: A general union representing workers in nearly all industrial sectors.

National Education Union (NEU): The largest education union in the UK, representing teachers and education professionals.

RMT (The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers): Representing more than 83,000 employees from almost every sector of the transport industry.

There’s a Union For Everyone

Unions aren’t just limited to workplaces either. Community unions like ACORN bring together people from all walks of life to fight for issues that matter in their daily lives - housing, public services and more. ACORN operates on a model similar to a workplace union, with branches based on neighbourhoods and towns, allowing members to take collective action on local issues.

Bold Leadership That Challenges the Status Quo

Union leaders like Mick Lynch, former General Secretary of the RMT, have become emblematic of a revitalised labour movement. Known for his candid and persuasive media appearances and unshakeable support for his cause and fellow workers, Lynch gained widespread attention during the UK’s first national railway strike since 1989. His unapologetic defence of workers’ rights and ability to articulate the struggles of working people have not only won him admiration but have also demystified trade union principles for many, especially younger generations. Lynch’s leadership exemplifies how outspoken union figures can challenge the establishment and bring workers’ issues to the forefront of national discourse.

Joining a union means you’re not alone. It means you have the backing of an organisation that will fight for your rights, provide support when you need it and work towards a fairer, more equitable society for all.

MANIFESTO JOIN A UNION

Oversized Sweatshirt

https://images.podos.io/ydi3qwc6wzdphjb25jpxtwcyzphumki4tvtjck2rtmhpjxyf.jpeg?z=1.2&fx=0.41666666666667&fy=0.41666666666667
https://images.podos.io/ydi3qwc6wzdphjb25jpxtwcyzphumki4tvtjck2rtmhpjxyf.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&h=855&z=1.2&fx=0.41666666666667&fy=0.41666666666667
https://images.podos.io/ydi3qwc6wzdphjb25jpxtwcyzphumki4tvtjck2rtmhpjxyf.jpeg.jpg?w=1920&h=1440&z=1.2&fx=0.41666666666667&fy=0.41666666666667
At first glance, Free the Nipple sounds playful, but behind the slogan is a serious call for change, a fight against double standards, body shaming, censorship and the idea that some bodies are automatically “indecent” while others are just… bodies.
Kneecap isn’t just a film - it’s a statement.
