FILTHY RICH IN BLOOM: Who is the Chelsea Flower Show really for?
Attempts at accessibility notwithstanding, the Royal Horticultural Society’s flagship show is still an elitist preserve. However, bridging the green gap is making headway with less publicised community organisations…

Every year, the Chelsea Flower Show rolls around and the news is full of perfectly pruned hedges, statement sculptures and high-end garden design. It's beautiful, but it leaves us at MANIFESTO feeling like we’re standing outside a very expensive greenhouse, nose pressed to the glass.

Because for all its publicised attempts to improve accessibility, Chelsea still feels like it’s not for everyone.

It’s hard to ignore the fact that the show is expensive to attend, steeped in tradition and heavily sponsored by banks and luxury brands. It reflects a certain kind of Britain - the kind that has always had the time, space and money to garden as leisure rather than survival.

To its credit, the show has made efforts to include community-led projects and urban greening initiatives. Designers like Grow2Know have brought powerful, alternative visions to the show, but those moments still feel like exceptions, not the rule. When you zoom out, it’s clear that the dominant voice is still one of wealth and heritage.

That context makes the resignation of Tayshan Hayden-Smith - a former Chelsea designer and co-founder of Grow2Know - even more significant. His decision to step away from the show over its prioritising of “exclusivity over equity” sends a powerful message: that ethics and representation shouldn’t be left out of the conversation, even in horticulture.

Gardening has always been more than aesthetics. It’s resistance. It’s healing. It’s necessity. From greening alleyways to planting hope on council estates, people have long used plants as tools of survival and protest. That reality rarely gets the same spotlight as the champagne receptions and Royal visits.

Projects Growing from the Ground Up

These are just a few of the people and collectives going above and beyond to make green spaces productive and available to everyone - quietly, creatively and without the fanfare of flower shows:

Grow2Know – Founded in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire, this organisation uses gardening to empower young people and communities to reclaim neglected spaces.

Black Rootz - A community-led farm in north London run by elders and young people together.

Black Girls Hike – While not strictly a gardening group, BGH champions access to green spaces for Black women and has inspired community-based outdoor activism across the UK.

Incredible Edible – A grassroots network that turns public spaces into edible gardens, encouraging people to grow, share, and connect through food.

Guerrilla Gardeners – Active for over a decade, this group plants flowers and vegetables in neglected public spaces under cover of night or with community celebration.

May Project Gardens – A former council house turned permaculture garden in Morden, South London, running community programmes around sustainability, food justice and creative expression.

These projects, and many others like them, are building a different kind of garden culture.
