On the surface, it’s often thrown around to mock someone for how they speak, dress or act, but underneath, it’s a term steeped in contempt. It’s not just about fashion or attitude, it’s about snobbery. And it’s used time and time again to put the proletariat back in their place.

Owen Jones’ book Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class lays bare how chav became a kind of socially acceptable slur - a way for the media, politicians and middle-class commentators to ridicule the working class without naming it directly. It’s no coincidence that during the 2000s, we saw a wave of TV characters like Vicky Pollard from Little Britain reinforce these damaging caricatures: loud, lazy, promiscuous, uneducated. It was parody dressed up as humour, but the impact was real. These portrayals helped shape public opinion, giving people permission to generalise, mock, dismiss and dehumanise people from hard working communities under the guise of comedy.

Today, we see the word chav still in circulation, especially among young people. Kids often use it casually, sometimes without knowing the weight it carries, describing someone’s outfit or behaviour as “chavvy,” or even applying the label to themselves in a semi-ironic way. But while the tone has softened for some, the classism behind it hasn’t gone anywhere. For older generations, chav remains a weapon to punch down - a quick way to shame and stereotype people who live outside the middle-class norm. Shockingly, the word “chav” appears in the dictionary with the following definition…

So, at MANIFESTO, we’re reclaiming it. We know who we are and we’re not ashamed of it. Sure, call out shitty behaviour, but our accents, where we live, our clothes, our choices - they’re not punchlines, they’re part of us. If it makes you feel better to try and raise yourself by putting others down, crack on, but CHAV’s ours now.
